Editing and creating a product

Editing a product by hand, creating one without a feed, and the rule that decides whether an import overwrites your change.

Most products arrive in a feed and maintain themselves. Editing by hand is for the cases where a vendor sent something wrong or did not send it at all — and for products that have no feed behind them.

Controls on this screen

  1. Create productSaves the product. Photos can only be uploaded afterwards.
  2. NameRequired. The code is pre-filled from it.
  3. Product codeRequired and unique. This is the identifier the product is matched by — change it only deliberately.
  4. TypeSimple, or with variants. The choice is hard to change later.
  5. GTIN / EANThe barcode. It is also the most reliable way duplicates are found.
  6. WeightFill it in if you use weight-based shipping — otherwise the shipping price comes out wrong.
  7. GalleryPhotos upload after the product exists. Order is changed by dragging; the star sets the lead image.
  8. StatusDraft until the product is finished.
  9. ActiveWhether the product exists at all.
  10. Visible in the catalogueWhether the shop shows it. The three toggles are independent — a product can be active and hidden.
  11. CategoryYour category. Without it nobody finds the product in the shop.
  12. BrandThe manufacturer.
  13. Price and stockSelling price, purchase price and availability.

The rule that decides everything

This is the most important sentence in the chapter:

What that looks like in practice:

SituationWhat to doWhy
A vendor sends a wrong name on one product.Edit it in the editor. It is marked manual and imports stop touching it.
A vendor sends wrong names on every product.Use a rule or a bulk action.Correcting a thousand products by hand is a week of work.
You want a product the vendor does not carry.Create it by hand.It has no vendor, so no import will ever change it.
Why can I not upload photos straight away?

A photo attaches to a product, which has to exist first. Save the product and the gallery opens up.

I changed the price and after the import it is the old one.

The price probably was not marked manual, or a flow rule overwrote it. Check the change source in Changes to review.

Can a simple product become one with variants?

Changing the type reshapes the product. If it already has orders or is being transferred, creating a new one is safer.
